Just steps away from the Roxbury, you can begin a very tame and civilized uphill climb in Kirkside Park at the base of Roxbury’s very own “stone steps.” These steps were created over a century ago and have recently been restored by the Roxbury Central School environmental education class. The steps are clearly marked and will lead you on an educational journey through the wooded hillside to Shepherd Hills golf course where you can continue your journey on a series of walking paths that line the mountainside. For more information on the stone steps and other hiking opportunities in the beautiful Catskill Mountains, contact The Roxbury’s front desk at manager@theroxburymotel.com

The Catskill Scenic Trail lies on top of the former rail bed of the Ulster and Delaware rail ride. This 19 mile trail offers a hard-packed surface that makes it perfect for hiking, biking, horseback riding and cross country skiing. A unique feature of this trail is a very gentle grade. Young and old will find this an easy and enjoyable trek, through some of the prettiest country in the world. Ask the front desk for one of our maps.

There are so many hikes in the four counties that comprise the Catskills that it can be a bit daunting to decipher all the information. A good resource for all of them is the visit-the-catskills website, but the best thing to do is just talk to us at the front office when you arrive. We have tons of suggestions and printed directions and can help you find a likable hike or a hike that you like if you like to hike like a hiker who likes to hike.

The Minekill Falls Overlook (see picture of waterfall on this page) takes you to one of the most beautiful waterfalls we’ve ever seen outside of Hawaii. Just put some tropical foliage around this waterfall and you could be somewhere in Maui! And it’s only 15 minutes from The Roxbury…
