Is there fishing in the Catskills? Well, uh, is there fishing in the ocean? Off of practically every road, through every trail, in every field, on every mountain, there is some body of water teaming with the perfect catch. Rivers, reservoirs, streams, brooks, lakes, you name it, the Catskills have it. Stay at either one of The Roxbury’s two locations, and you can fish either right on the property in the East Branch of the Delaware River at the Motel or at the base of an amazing waterfall at Stratton Falls! Complete information about licensing and cool places to fish are available on the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) web site.
Reservoirs
People catch enormous monsters in the mighty Pepacton, Cannonsville, and Schoharie reservoirs. Spend your days and nights on the Pepacton surrounded by its pristine peaks. Check out water temperatures, reservoir levels, and fishing guides at this site. To fish on the reservoirs, you’ll need a special reservoir permit in addition to a regular fishing license. Permits and boating information can be obtained by applying in person between March 15 and October 15 at one of 6 New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) offices. The closest one to The Roxbury is: Rte. 30, Downsville NY 13755, (607) 363-7009 or 7010.
Fly Fishing
American Fly fishing was born in the Catskill Mountains and the epicenter of Catskill fly fishing euphoria is located in Roscoe, NY, just a hop, skip, and cast away from The Roxbury. Check out the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum or the Catskill Fly Fishing websites for more information on the area. Reel ’em in, baby.
